A PlaCe where I GroW Up(1)–YMCA KL’s Leadership Course

Friday, December 29th, 2006

I’ve attended a leadership course organised my YMCA KL –> Middle Leadership Development Course earlier frm 19th-22nd December 2006…I’ve learned lotsa things I’ve never learned b4 abt leadership in this course….so, I think I shall share wif u guys abt my joyful process of learning during this leadership course.

First of all….

What is LEADERSHIP?

If ur answer is….. Leadership is all abt ordering ppl to do what u want them to do, giving commands and make sure no one disobey u….

Ur answer is still right….(dictatorship-ism included)…..but this answer only applies on the Kapten or Army commanders in military training camp….hehez

The Definition of LEADERSHIP in nowadays’ context…..

LEADERSHIP is abt how u connect a bridge between you(yourself) to a group of ppl wif different diversities(eg like diff background, personality, strengths and weaknesses), and lead them towards achieving a SAME goal/vision….

As for the leadership course I attendeded…… It’s divided into 5 main modules: M1-Team Building, M2-Personality DRAPC, M3-Leadership Sills, M4-Conflict Resolution and Problem solving and M5-Communication styles and Group Presentation.

*I’ll go on by further my elaborations each module in the upcoming posts…

Joyful moments during the course…

Day 1- Registration and Team Builing

We’re accommodated to the YMCA hostel…I gt to know 2 of my roommates, Priya and Yan Yee

at night, Ice breaker…We were divided into 5 groups: Ding Dong Bell, Sunshine, Spiderman, MNG and last but not least…my TEAM—AZLAN

*tat “azlan” name is not a Malay name for heaven’s sake…It originated frm the lion king frm the movie… The Chronicles of Narnia–The Lion, the Witch n the Wardrobe….=D

Day 2- Games and lotsa lotsa lectures on M1, M2 and M3.

lectures? Bored u guys off? Hehe…I din feel bored at all!!…..and I kept bombarding questions to the speakers/facilitators until they oso cannot tahan(cannot stand I mean)…hehez…like tat the boring lectures will become fun ma…

*one of my teammates=>Shah fallen into sick….and she had to leave us tat day…sob…:’(

Day 3- Games and lectures on M4 and M5…

Games and lectures during day time…

Individual presentation at night (it’s like public speaking…they simply “threw” u a topic/material/newspaper cutting…and u hv to speak for at least 1 minute…^^)

Day 4- Group presentation

our team presented a sketch, entitiled… “Leaders are Made, Not Born”…our presentation was a great success! And we won the first place!!…thx to Alvin, Timothy, Jiayuan, Noah, Bryan…and ME, of course…haha

Next……

Food and Accommodation

The food was really nice…(except tat sirap jelly…yucks…hehe)…As our RM30 registration fee is refundable, we can consider tat we gt all the 3 meals for free, as well as cookies and muffins for tea time and supper…^.^…

As for the accommodation, the hostel shud be regarded as HOTEL instead…hehe…it’s a very nice and comfortable stay there…

That’s all for now…I’ll keep on uploading the elaborations of the 5 modules I learned throughout the course in future…just be sure tat u guys will catch up my blog…^^

"Ishhh……Why this stupid computer nv work one??Why Yahoo! page still tak muncul2 aft 10 mins??Kan Streamyx sudah connect but still cannot online…..cari pasai ah??"

"hor!!Must be tat stupid streamyx!!Kan orang dah bayar setiap bulan….still problem banyak….tak boleh lah…..mesti mau complain ni…."

*****************************************************************************************

yesterday morning…I was browsing yahoo and frenster(to blog)…then suddenly the connection went very slow like siput….then I was some kinda "geram" and din wanna online instead aft 10 mins I waited for the Yahoo and frenster page to "pop" out…..

similiar story as mine can be accessed here……

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2006/12/28/nation/16426304&sec=nation

then I passed the pc for my brother to use….He’s kinda weird and wondered why I’m so BAIK HATI today(usually I never give him turn to online if I hvn’t on9 for at least 3 hours…hehez)…..

later, baru he knew abt the problem…he’s kinda geram either..he couldn’t access to his frenster page and online on MSN either..at the end….he ended up playing DOTA instead

U guys hv the same problem either??

Here’s the explanation……..

Local access to Internet services and websites hosted overseas came to a practical standstill after international links were disrupted by the earthquake that struck southern Taiwan on Tuesday night.

The earthquake damaged submarine cables that form part of the region-wide Asia Pacific Cable Network 2 (APCN 2), disrupting voice and Internet communications over much of Asia.

APCN 2 is a 19,000km-long fibre-optic cable network linking Japan, South Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore, the United States, Europe and Australia.

The network has been up since October 2002 and is jointly operated by 26 Asian telecommunications carriers, including TM Bhd.

The damaged links are between Shantou (China) and Tanshui (Taiwan), and, Lantau (Hong Kong) and Chongming (China).

Internet service provider (ISP) Jaring said the disruption started at 3.45am yesterday, and warned users to expect congestion to and from overseas websites during peak hours.

TM Net said in a statement the disruption caused outages to several of its international transit and peering links.

Following is another good piece of writing frm my senior regarding this topic…..

http://changyang1230.blogspot.com/

So…..tat’s the reason….unexpectable huh??

For me….no internet for a day(when I’m at home) can make me BORED to DEATH…..now, only I realised tat how I’ve been addicted to the world of Internet…..(reminds me of the Chinese essay which won me the High Distinction prize in an National Chinese Essay Competition, entitiled…."The Influences of Internet towards The Younger Generation of today")…..

One day at home without Internet is really DREADFUL and TORTURING for me!!…I really felt like I can’t do anything without Internet..(hoho..tat’s BAD!!)…..A lot of times, I oso ended up arguing wif my mom and brothers just b’cos the Internet(I still remember the last time was on Christmas Eve’s night….so bad la me…hehez)…

I wonder how many ppl gt the same problem as me?esp teens….See how the Internet has controlled our life and mind…..

oops….Sounds like I deviate frm the topic ady….

ok, I shall stop crapping here….hopefully the Internet addicted ppl out there enjoy reading this post….^^

NS=National Service=PLKN….^^

Recently, Some of my F5 juniors requested me abt the NS…and I think it’s the time for me to share my experience in NS here either….hope it dun bored u guys too much…hehez

**********************************************************************************

To my junior out there who will be going for NS training….

U guys must be kinda shocked to know the words of "Tahniah, anda telah berjaya dipilih utk menyertai program latihan khidmat negara"…I dunno u guys will consider urself as lucky or UNLUCKY….but since the computer in Jab Khidmat Negara like u so much….wat to do….just accept the fact and HAVE FUN!!!

well, I shall start by telling u what exactly is the National Service. Lots of people got the stereotype or bad impressions that…..national service must be something like torturing military training….I had that concept in my mind either earlier when I know I was selected….scared, excited, worried, curiosity….all kinds of feelings came to my mind…but now, after I’ve undergone the training, I think I got the concept of what’s abt the national service.

Our country’s national service seems to be lots more different than other countries. As M’sia is not a military-based country, so there’s actually juz a few of military sentiments in our training. Wif other words, the national service in M’sia is more on producing a well-rounded teenager wif patriotism n toleration spirit among the different races, based on 4 modules, which r physical training(military-styled), characteristic moulding, nationality and community service…U can say it’s a programme with ‘4 in one’…but if u wanna ask my opinion, I’m doubting that whether 3 months time(for my case juz 64 days) is enough for a teen to truly immerse themselves in all kind of the modules planned by the government….well, I dunno either…it’s good either b’coz I know most of teens dun wanna suffer in those training for longer period…(maybe including me…haha..)

Let me bring u a bit descriptions abt my camp…I was selected to undergo training in Kem D’Jelapang, Kedah. My campsite is actually in the middle of the forest. The nearest Malay village was abt 3 kilometers away…A totally undeveloped rural area, surrounded by natural tropical forest. There’re 470 trainees in my camp, 251 gals n 219 boys. Gals r called ‘Wirawati’(means heroin in Malay) while boys r called ‘Wira’(means hero in Malay). Gals and boys are accommodated separately at 8 blocks of dorms each, n 2 block of gals n 2 block of boys will be combined to form one team. There’re 4 teams all together, which are Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta. The formation of the teams is important coz we will hv a lot of competitions among teams later.

One thing u gonna hate must be…the sun-burn!…tell u wat…My skin has already turned dark earlier during sports day n school’s extra curricular activities..and now…NS some moreEven though I tried the sun block or whitening lotion, it just din help much….As most activities will be conducted outdoor, so…I think some of u guys would become an ugly black coal when u come back(okok, not scaring u guys)….tips to turn back to white….just stay home aft NS training and dun go anywhere!..=D

but still, National Service was a good and total new experience for me either coz I learnt to manage my daily routine, wash the clothes myself(which I seldom/never done at home), be disciplined(our team was punished to do the bumping in front of the everyone coz once we’re late…really embarrassing!!!), independent, learn others cultures, experienced the natural rain forest surroundings…oh…n the physical module activities like wall-climbing, monkey bars, flying-fox, canoeing, jungle trekking are really awesome…

The 2 modules which I was undergoing for the first 3 weeks were Physical training n Characteristic Building . For the physical training, I must admit it’s really exhausting n tiring!…For the first month, we had to train our stamina first b4 we go on further to tougher training in forest. We’re required to wake up as early as at 5.30 am to have morning exercise at 6.30am…(Sit-up, bumping, jogging……). It’s embarrassing coz I still dunno how to do bumping in correct way… Then every weekdays’ afternoon, we’re required to march or hv taekwando training(called TTS…I 4gt wat it stands for ady) under the hot hot sun! No afternoon nap…n I wonder why there wasn’t even a cloud to help us to block the sunshine…Some of the gals were fainted n fallen into sick(some even being sent to the hospital) b’cos they couldn’t stand of the hot weather…but I feel blessed as I still hv the stamina undergo the training…poof!

As for the characteristic building module, we had class every 9am…I got nothing much to say…Sometimes the class was boring but sometimes it wasn’t. I said it’s boring coz the games we played are childish…… n it wasn’t boring coz some of the games we played n the DVD we watched required us to think. Whatever game or DVD it is, it has something meaningful hidden in each of them, which will guide us towards a more positive character…it may be useful for those really want to change…but as the matter of fact, it’s still hard to change the leopard’s spots. Some of the trainees aren’t treat it seriously though…(sigh, I can say I juz accept 60% of what the trainers taught)…but it’s still a worth and meaningful programme.

Module 3-Kenegaraan……din teach me much actually…..it’s like the combination of kenegaraan of PA f6+a bit M’sia’s history…..TOTALLY BORING!!!…..I think the jurulatih even know lesser than us….how to teach oo?….Most of my classmates just went in to SLEEP….for me….I went inside to TALK…haha…I just like the Parliment debate and group presentation parts….arguing and debating is always fun…hehe

Last but not least….Module 4–Khidmat Komuniti…..kinda fun….there’re 4 categories under this module….(a)Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam  (b)Alam Sekitar (c)Khidmat sosial (d)Agensi Perkhidmatan Bukan Awam….for (a)U will go and help the Jab2 like JKR, TNB, Tentera Malaysia and so on….(b)they will send u to Air terjun, forrest or park to kutip sampah….(c)U will gt the chance to visit old folks home, orphanage or Malay village…As for the Malay village…U can even gt foster parents under Program Anak Angkat….(d)U will go to agensi like MADA……This module is the best as we gt the chance to GO OUT of the "PRISON camp"….hehe

After being in the camp just for a week, somehow I felt disconnected from the world outside …no computer, no handy, no tv, no radio, no magazines, no novels…when I came back on Raya Haji’s break, I tried to keep myself updated by contacting my close frens, reading collected ‘old’ newspapers, online…but things turned out better aft Raya Haji’s break…..they provided us wif tv and newspapers….finally…haha

As for the religious praying….

They will send u off to Masjid, kuil India, church and tokong once a week(depends on wat religion u r)…..As for the chinese(non-Malay I mean….TY, haha…I 4gt u r not Chinese) frm my batch…We gt the chance to pray at "Siam Wat" in Jitra, Kedah….we oso gt the chance to join the activities organised by the Association of Buddhist Jitra…..^^

As for the frens(I mean social)….
dun wory too much….just be active and try to mingle wif others….tolerate wif Malays and Indians frens….dun gt urself involve wif the racist conflicts and u will be fine…^^

I think I write too much ady…I shud stop here……Wish u all the best

waiting for the day u guys finally graduated frm NS!!

P/S:If still gt question, dun hesitate to post a comment or msg me…as well as those who gt selcted to go in Kem D’Jelapang…pls add urself as a member of….
